Portland Basin, Ashton Canal

Portland basin marks the junction of the Ashton with the Huddersfield Narrow canal (towards the top of the photo) and the Peak Forest canal (to the right of the photo). The Ashton heads off in a SW direction (at the bottom of the photo). The basin was nicknamed 'weavers rest', so called as many weavers reputedly drowned themselves here during hard times.

Not anonymous! Pressed button too quick. Spent a quiet night moored up just through bridge in May. Made very welcome by visiting committee with informational leaflets and safe mooring advice. Will be back next May to try and complete South Pennine Ring. Third time lucky!

The Ashton Canal actually continues a further 1/2 mile to Whitelands Basin where the actual meeting of the Huddersfield Canal is made

Is that a true story about the weavers? Sounds gruesome!
